For over 25 years nationwide, the Special Service Area (SSA) economic development funding tool has provided commercial districts the financial means to maintain clean, attractive and competitive districts above and beyond basic city services. SSAs are locally defined, sponsored and managed districts. Today, over 30 commercial districts within the City of Chicago, and over 800 nationally, use the SSA economic development tool to finance and manage locally important programs and services.
