Open Streets Coming to Milwaukee Avenue on Sunday, September 16th27-Jul-2012
We are very excited to bring Open Streets to Milwaukee Avenue on Sunday, September 16th in partnership with the Active Transportation Alliance! During this event, we will open Milwaukee Avenue between Ashland and Western from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for people to play, walk, bike and enjoy healthy recreation without motorized traffic. This is not a festival, instead it is a FREE event that features dynamic programming open to everyone focusing on health, education and arts.
Open Streets is an innovative movement to reclaim public space and turn streets into “paved parks”, creating a safe, car-free public space where communities can connect. This concept follows the CicloVia (bike way) model which has proven widely successful in U.S. cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland and New York City and Latin America, Bogota Columbia, Guadalajara, Mexico. Last year, Chicago had a very successful Open Streets event on State Street. This video gives a good snapshot of the event: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Fz7NppVfU&feature=youtube_gdata_player.
