Description of organization: The Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce focuses on economic and community development initiatives. We are the local business association for the Wicker Park and Bucktown communities and our strength lies in the number and diversity of our Membership. We strive to develop innovative ways to increase local commerce and quality of life.

The Chamber administers the WPB Special Service Area (SSA #33). SSAs, often known as Business Improvement Districts in other cities, provide a fair and transparent way to finance and manage programs to create, maintain and manage clean, attractive and competitive commercial districts. The SSA is overseen by a Commission of volunteer stakeholders in the SSA and guided by a Master Plan adopted in 2009 and updated in 2016.

 

Position Description: We are seeking an intern to assist with the SSA #33 Arts Committee. Primary duties include revamping the WPB Arts section of the wickerparkbucktown.com website and creating content for a new Facebook page dedicated to the arts. Other duties include assisting the Program Manager and Program Specialist on specific art installations.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

PRIMARY DUTIES - Social media and website content

  • Assess existing web, Facebook and Instagram pages and sites dedicated to Arts in Wicker Park Bucktown. Ascertain their value to the Arts Committee and create/revamp pages
  • Research compelling materials that focus on architecture, design, and the arts – especially locally!
  • Set up timeline and posts for social media (typically Facebook / Instagram) and WPB Arts section of the wickerparkbucktown.com website

ANCILLARY DUTIES

 Milwaukee Avenue Historic District -

  • Research the District and produce compelling materials that focus on architecture, design, and the arts
  • Set up timeline and posts for social media / website

Public Murals –

  • Activate vacant storefronts with public murals and/or posters with historic information about buildings
  • Explore a public murals initiative under the viaducts of the 606 / Bloomingdale Trail. Reach out to relevant stakeholders – Chicago Parks District, Trust for Public Land, and Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail

 “One Big Thing” public art installation

  • Assist the Chamber staff, as well as the artist (Lynn Basa), in working through the permitting and installation process with the City of Chicago. The site will be at the corner of Milwaukee/Wood/Wolcott.
  • Create social media and newsletter content, as needed

Wicker Tree” public art installation

  • Assist the Chamber staff, as well as the artist (Mike Helbing), in working through the permitting and installation process with the Chicago Parks District. The site is intended to be in the green space of Wicker Park.
  • Create social media and newsletter content, as needed

 

Qualifications:

-          Ability to work independently and with minimal direction

-          Strong skills in Microsoft Office

-          Research and writing capabilities

-          Good interpersonal skills

-          Familiarity with a variety of social media

-          Experience with Adobe Creative Suite a plus!

-          Interest in visual arts, local business, and economic development issues

Rate/Stipend (if applicable):  $15/hour

 

Expected start date and hours per week:  10-15 hours/week.  In-office hours are flexible. Candidate WILL be expected to attend monthly meetings of the WPB Arts Committee (4th Tuesday of each month at 9:00 a.m.) Expected start date: flexible         Expected end date: flexible
