The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Garden Design

This lecture will explore various examples of garden design and consider the question: what makes for good design and installation, and what does not? We will review various projects from Chicago neighborhoods in order to measure their successes and failures. We will evaluate these gardens in light of a number a basic principles, including function, sustainability, practicality, and aesthetics. Brian C. Shea is the president of Voltaires Gardener. Voltaires Gardener is a design\build firm specializing in the challenges of the urban garden. He holds a bachelors degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Notre Dame and a Masters degree in Philosophy from Villanova University. Before starting his firm, he worked at the City of Chicago Department of Environment in their community gardening programs, Greencorps Chicago and the Summer Environmental Schools initiative. He began his gardening career in his backyard growing tomatoes with his grandfather.

The Wicker Park & Bucktown Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present its official slate of nominees for the office of President, Treasurer and five directorships for the 2007-08 term.

Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be featured. As a member of the Wicker Park & Bucktown Chamber of Commerce, you are invited to attend, meet the nominees and cast your vote that evening. (All the while enjoying a fun evening of great food and conversation with fellow chamber members).

According to the Wicker Park & Bucktown bylaws, you may also wish to cast your vote by e-mail. All e-mail votes must be submitted to info@wickerparkbucktown.com later than 5:00pm November 16th.

Please identify yourself when submitting your e-mail votes so that we can properly record your participation in the election process.

Only members in good standing shall be eligible to vote at the November membership elections meeting by majority vote to seat Officers and Directors. There shall be one vote per membership of record as of the day of the election. Please note that only members within the general membership category (having paid $200 or more in membership dues) are eligible to vote. Please feel free to contact the Chamber office at 773-384-2672 with any questions regarding your membership status.
