Challengers Comics + Conversation
Challengers Correspondence Club
Join Donovan Challenger for an evening of corresponding postally with your favorite comics via letter. Every month, we'll focus on sending mail (real, physical mail) to a specific comic. We know you have opinions. Time to share them with the people who are actually responsible. We'll have stationery and stamps, envelopes and everything else you need to take the conversation out of the store and into the mail.

AdventureLand Works on Paper
A Gift From Elaine by Messejah Washington
Messejah Washington is a visual artist looking to document two constants; time and space, as a result of communication. This communication lies in human interaction and interaction to things pertaining to our senses. Working in both figurative and abstract styles he looks to document history, as a reminder of the fleeting nature of this world, and its everlasting beauty. He looks to allow his work to serve as a fundamental tool in helping to better understand the past and the present in better preparation for the things to come.

A Story I Need To Tell: 3 Comic Artists in Chicago
Gene Ha began his career in comics drawing superheroes for Marvel (X-Men, Captain America etc) and DC Comics (Superman, Justice League etc). Ash H.G. is a cartoonist, illustrator, and painter living and working in Chicago, IL. After completing his raw and visceral 93-page graphic novel, Children of the Black Circus, in 2016, Ash began talking with comics publisher 2dcloud about reworking the story to create a new graphic novel. Gretchen Hasse is a storyteller working in comics, collage, public art, and moving images. Put the Camera Down
Put the Camera Down is a photography exhibition featuring Kristen Gianaris and her photos from China. Kristen's photos are a collection of photos that highlight China's ethnic minority groups, Tibetans, and tea culture. Her style of photography emphasizes a "put the camera down" approach. In other words, she believes that photography is much more than a point and shoot art. Her work involves the art of connection and communication. Her photos tell stories and experiences, raise cultural awareness, and serve to inspire.

flowers always... + Outstanding Balance
In flowers always... Alejandro Jiménez-Flores mines images from memory to explore relationships to self and family (both chosen and determined by birth). Alejandro draws from memory the geraniums from their aunt's garden, where they recall playing with their cousin and collecting dried petals and leaves from the geraniums and placing them into a bucket with water and dirt. With Outstanding Balance, Jeffrey Michael Austin presents a new body of sculptural works that offer playful and poetic lenses through which to meditate on the philosophical paradox of desire for private gain in an inexplicable, omnipresent universe; capitalism in the cosmos.

One Wall: Lindsey Liss + ArtWear: Steven Clarke
Lindsey Liss is an intuitive creator, idea incubator, love generator, bad energy terminator, speaker of truth, ego-slayer, light saber, knowledge collector, and self-inspector. She is a poet, designer and artist. Steven Clarke's digital sculptures are explorations of balance, the forces and curves of water. His series, Smooth Sailing, combines the ephemeral and reflective quality of water's surface with the solidity and strength of stainless steel.

Down with Desire
LVL3 proudly presents Down with Desire, a group show in partnership with the ACRE residency program. This year we bring together artists Sarah Bowling, Erick Medel, Luis E. Roots & Culture
U.N.I.T. with Chains to Nothing in the Milwaukee Ave Window Gallery
Collectively, creative energies are like lighting bolts, whichever space they hit, it is no longer the same. U.N.I.T. is about this connectivity and change that aggregates, inspires and honors communities and culture’s unique presences; Chicago, we’re here. There will be seven artists, designers and musicians who will arrange their DIY music-inspired installations, artifacts, and custom-made performance clothes. The connection between these artists span the range of belonging to the city of Chicago, those who were “born and raised,” some who recently moved here, some who arrived yesterday, some passing through, and some who have already left. These myriad connections showcase the fluctuating nature of cultural production and gradual creation of community.

VGA Gallery
Hunt and Peck: Alternative Expressions of the Keyboard
This exhibition functions as an intervention on the everydayness of keyboards by presenting them as the site of artistic innovation. Each artist featured investigates and prods the capabilities of the keyboard to transform it from a quotidian object into a expressive interactive and visual experience, a practice that video game scholar Brian Schrank refers to as “affordance mining.” These experiments challenge our expectations of what pedestrian technologies are capable of, and in doing so also challenge the rhetorics and values embedded in technology, consumer electronics, and video game development.
