Weekend Arts Guide (5/4-5/6 2018)
They say April showers (or maybe snow showers) bring May flowers, and sure enough spring is in full swing here in Wicker Park and Bucktown! That means that as nature begins to bloom, so do new exhibitions and art shows. Get all the information you need here on our first May installment of the WPB Weekend Arts Guide!
Friday is a big day with Flat Iron Arts kicking off the month with their usual First Friday open studios event from 6:00pm to 11:00pm at the Flat Iron Arts Building with additional artwork, music, and workshops from 7:00pm to 11:00pm at The Hall at The Robey. This is an excellent opportunity to take in tons of work from numerous artists in a laid back and informal setting. Across the street Heaven Gallery will host their Classical Music Series with CHAI Collaborative Ensemble Presents: The Gleam at 7:00pm. General admission is $20 with student and industry tickets at $10. Concurrently, Volumes Bookcafe will hold another session of Bad Grammar Theater from 7:00pm to 9:00pm with Chicago authors reading some of their best horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and pulp fiction.
Saturday is Cino de Mayo! There are tons of ways to celebrate around the neighborhood, on what is expected to be a beautiful day. To mark the occasion, Jackson Junge Gallery will be offering 5% off the purchase of any artwork with live music from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Corbett vs. Dempsey will hold their own Concert: Joe McPhee and Daunik Lazro Duo at 3:00pm. Occult Bookstore with have a May Pole Celebration starting at 5:30pm. And the night's biggest art event and Cinco de Mayo celebration is sure to be Heaven Gallery's Latinx Nation: 18th Annual Benefit Art Auction and Dance Party from 7:00pm to midnight. The event will include a silent artwork auction, Aztec ceremonies, live music and dance, and the public unveiling of a new mural! Tickets are $20 at the door and all proceeds to go help Heaven Gallery (a non-profit art space) and other area organizations form a community land trust and fight against the gentrification and rapid development that is driving so many similar spaces out of our neighborhoods. Aside from these events, Saturday is also Free Comic Book Day and both Quimby's Bookstore and Challengers Comics will be participating and celebrating!
Sunday sees RED come to a close at Jackson Junge Gallery and FireCat Projects will hold their Truth or Lie Reading Series at 7:00pm. Be sure to catch Systems at Play at LVL3 Gallery during their Sunday open hours.
Other ongoing exhibitions in the neighborhoods include Joseph Bigley, Yu Ling Huang, and Al-Qawi Tazal Nanavati at ARC Gallery; Brian Calvin: Pressing on and Barbara Rossi: Slippers at Corbett vs. Dempsey; Beth Adler & Nancy Gardner: What I've Learned From Flower Arranging at FireCat Projects; and Dan Miller & Aaron Walker - Handkerchiefs and Flowers at Roots & Culture with Carolina Poveda - Whispering into the Shell in their Window Gallery.
