Weekend Arts Guide (5/31-6/3 2018)

This weekend's arts guide is big one as we kick off the summer gallery season and the month of June with a packed Friday night full of must-see art and the start of the Wicker Park Farmers Market on Sunday!
Start your weekend intrigue off early on Thursday night at Quimby's Bookstore when Georgia Webber reads from her book Dumb: Living Without a Voice or Volumes Bookcafe where Dave Zirin discusses his book Jim Brown: Last Man Standing. Both events begin at 7:00pm.
Friday night is our big night this weekend! The first day of the month is also the first Friday, which means the monthly festivities of First Friday at Flat Iron Arts is back! Check out open studios in the Flat Iron Arts building from 6:00pm to 10:00pm and continue the fun and happenings at The Hall at The Robey from 7:00pm to 11:00pm with music and artwork plus pieces from YellowKorner's archive. Across Milwaukee Avenue, Heaven Gallery hosts their Classical Music Series with Chicago Solisti from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. Corbett vs. Dempsey will open their new show Josiah McElheny: Cosmic Love with a reception from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. AdventureLand Works on Paper will hold an opening reception from 7:00pm to 10:00pm for Where The Years Take You by Rick Telander. A few blocks up Western, Bucktown Gallery will also have an opening reception for their exhibition Fasion, Body, and Garment from 6:00pm to 10:30pm. Quimby's kicks off the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) with the 5 Cartoonists, 1 City: Minneapolis Showcase at 7:00pm. And Bad Grammar Theater returns to Volumes Bookcafe with readings of Chicago's best horror, fantasy, and sci-fi read by their authors from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.
Slow down and enjoy some coffee and comics on Saturday. Challengers Comics will host Adventure Time/Hero Initiative from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Grab lunch and a drink down the street at Bite Cafe's Art Reception & Happy Hour event from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
Sunday kicks off the start of the neighborhood market season with the official first day of the Wicker Park Farmers Market and CREATE Series from 8:00am to 2:00pm! Be sure to stop by and take in the many different activities planned and grab some regional, sustainable food for your pantry! While you're out, stop by Heaven Gallery for The Smile Behind the Mask Artist Talk at 1:00pm. And wrap up your day with a Crochet for Knitters workshop at Firefly Fiber Arts Studio from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.
