The Hideout
Devil in a Woodpile
For years, the free, unamplified, middle-of-the-room Devil in a Woodpile residency at the Hideout in Chicago was a civic treasure. A coupla sets of rowdy, bawdy, grooving, swinging ROOTS music played the way it was meant to heard---unplugged and part of a neighborhood bar party. Such is the power and mystery of Devil that during their sold out first album release show at the Hideout, there was a lightning storm that knocked out power to the whole area. The barstaff put the beer on ice, lit some candles and the band rocked it like only they could---it was like hopping into a wormhole to the early 1900's. Devil in a Woodpile, they play blues. They also play country. Ragtime. Hot Jazz. Hillbilly. It's all the same to them. Devil In A Woodpile doesn’t have to turn it up to 11 to get their point across--one listen to their raunchy, acoustic mayhem and you’ll be convinced.

AdventureLand Works on Paper
Strong Futures by David Obermeyer
Obermeyer first met Father Pfleger while working on Spike Lee’s film Chiraq as the Production Sound Mixer. Months after the film wrapped he was approaching Father Pfleger asking how he could help through photography. Pfleger brought Obermeyer to the Strong Futures program, which seeks through mentoring and love to help and find employment for the most underserved young adults in our city. For the past couple of years Obermeyer has been photographing the Strong Futures program. His hope is that these portraits expose an invisible part of our city, the part that through racism and neglect remain unseen and forgotten. That this invisible part of our city is able to attain what all strive for; food, shelter, work that is rewarding and a chance to provide for our families.

BrittyReaKnits Trunk Show
Brittney of BrittyRaeKnits spent most of her life in sunny Arizona until she found herself moving to Northern Michigan. To keep her desert blood warm in the Great White North, she immediately took up knitting and it quickly became an obsession! Though Brittney loved knitting, she had a hard time finding the exact colors she wanted to work with. Not one to give up, she began to create her own colors, experimenting with different techniques and fibers. Thus, BrittyRaeKnits was born! Now, Brittney creates super-saturated, speckly colorways on high quality yarn bases for makers who love color as much as she does!

Between a Rock and a Dream Artist Talk
Join artists Catherine Hu and Yunhee Min to walk through their show Between a Rock and a Dream. Coffee donated by Starbucks and pastries by Artemios.
We forge objects as a way to satisfy a lack, to fill the gap that materialises when something is both wanted and out of reach. The works of Catherine Hu and Yunhee Min in Between a Rock and a Dream are an attempt to reconcile the world as experienced and the world as desired. They work like puns, bringing two meanings together into one word or form. Existing forms and imagery are drawn from the world, then played with, to create situations that expose habits we take for granted, and allow for alternative ways of interpreting our environment.
1:00pm

Ongoing Exhibitions

The Dime
JUMBO: Nicholas Sistler
Artist Nicholas Sistler fashions whimsical content with an intimate scale. For JUMBO, Sistler has focussed on inventive playfulness through an intuitive process developed over decades of practice. Sistler treats his miniature images (most would fit on a postcard) like advertising, captivating his audience with brilliant colors and meticulous detail, leading them into compositions with beguiling structure. Each painting balances multiple aspects, details and layers, and the more that people look at a painting, the more they’ll be rewarded by Sistler's fascination with optical illusions, ambiguous visual information, and play with space and perspective.

Firecat Projects
LANDED: Nina Weiss
Firecat Projects presents LANDED, a solo exhibition featuring the work Nina Weiss. Nina’s recent large-scale landscape paintings on un-stretched canvases coincide with her move to a new live/work loft space. LANDED refers to a state of being; to the solidity and permanence of landscape, and to Nina’s grounding passion for landscape painting.

Gallery Café
Gordana Draganic
Finding inspiration in love and family, Draganic has created a reflective journey of art to share with the public. Stories in each piece, along with colors, curvilinear forms, burns, and texture create an array of visual moments full of discovery.

Heaven Gallery
Between a Rock and a Dream + Vaulted Breath/Winded Spirit
We forge objects as a way to satisfy a lack, to fill the gap that materialises when something is both wanted and out of reach. The works of Catherine Hu and Yunhee Min in Between a Rock and a Dream are an attempt to reconcile the world as experienced and the world as desired. They work like puns, bringing two meanings together into one word or form. Existing forms and imagery are drawn from the world, then played with, to create situations that expose habits we take for granted, and allow for alternative ways of interpreting our environment.
Jacqueline Surdell’s latest solo exhibition, Vaulted Breath/Winded Spirit, draws upon the tradition of storytelling as it forms personal histories and subsequent understandings of self. Through seemingly disparate objects, Surdell re-tells the tale of the first irreverent woman as “She” explains her complex journey through time. Strange, grotesque forms exist as monuments to the inexplicable — creating confusion and a sense of the unknown. Mythical masks protect the wearer and explosions of light and dark represent “Her” struggles in a world that is impossible to understand. It is here Surdell manifests architectural realms that slip between the known past and unknown futures.

Roots & Culture
Screen Play: Katy Albert & Emily Eddy + Ariolimax di: Sarah Martino & Claire Jade in the Window
Being behind and in front of a camera is a rough way to live and most of us are living it these days. In Screen Play Katy Albert and Emily Eddy explore performance between the screen, on screen, off screen, and some screens in between. Razing the standards of good taste, videos range from the grotesque to the intimate in a robust schedule of new and recent work. Objects arranged throughout the space reinforce the anguish and pleasure of living with oneself on the mind.

Video Game Art Gallery
Studio Oleomingus: Notes in the Margins of History
Based out of Chala, India, Studio Oleomingus is a two-person game studio known for their visually stunning and narrative-driven games and about the history of India, post-colonialism, and a generative approach toward blending fact and fiction. "Somewhere" is a videogame adaptation of an anthology by the Gujarati playwright Mir UmarHassan, about the search for a mythical city called Kayamgadh. Set in nineteenth century British Colonial India, it traces the lives of several people as they search for a fabled journal which charts a route to Kayamgadh.
